Base station and EPC communication principle
📌

What is an Evolved Packet Core (EPC)?

An evolved packet core (EPC) controls the various information packets that are sent between mobile devices and the core network. Unlike an eNodeB (evolved NodeB), which is a base station that controls mobile devices in one or more cells, an EPC controls the communication between the core network and mobile devices.

📌

What is LTE EPC architecture?

Let's dive into the technical details of the LTE EPC architecture: The UE represents the mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet, that communicates with the LTE network. It includes the Mobile Equipment (ME) and the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card. The eNodeB is the LTE base station that communicates directly with the UE.

📌

What is the difference between EPC & NGC?

EPC is classified into two types: traditional LTE core network (supporting access through LTE base stations) and upgraded LTE core network (also called EPC+, supporting access through 5G base stations). Next Generation Core (NGC): a 5G core network. NGC is a core network built based on 5G standards and supports access to 5G base stations.

📌

What are the interfaces in LTE EPC?

The LTE EPC architecture is defined by several interfaces that facilitate communication between network elements. The key interfaces include: S1 Interface: Between the eNodeB and the EPC (MME and SGW). S5/S8 Interface: Between the SGW and the PGW. S11 Interface: Between the MME and the SGW for control plane signaling.

📌

What are the components of EPC?

EPC consists of the SGW (Serving Gateway), PGW (Packet Data Network Gateway), MME (Mobility Management Entity), and HSS (Home Subscriber Server). It is connected to external networks such as IMS (IP Multimedia Core Network Subsystem).

📌

Why is LTE/EPC a global standard technology?

For these reasons, LTE/EPC has become a global standard technology adopted by many mobile operators around the world. LTE is a wireless technology for access networks and EPC refers to a core network architecture that aggregates access networks including LTE and the existing 2G/3G.
