Saclay, France - After four years of design, modeling and simulation, a team of 25 people comprised of CNRS (French National Center for Scientific Research), Stellantis and Saft engineers and researchers today unveiled an innovative prototype of an energy storage battery that integrates the inverter and charger functions.

Stellantis is testing a new EV battery design said to eliminate an EV's separate charger and inverter hardware, making it more efficient and yielding more range. The secret to its success, Stellantis said, is that each battery module is controlled separately via software and circuitry.
What is the difference between a battery charger and an inverter?
The inverter converts direct current (DC) from the battery into the alternating current (AC) required by the electric motor to turn the wheels. The charger performs the same task in reverse: the AC voltage is turned into DC voltage in order to charge the battery in a hybrid plug-in vehicle or an all-electric vehicle.

In addition, with its unique architecture that incorporates a voltage step-up, the charger-inverter offers a very high output, and increases autonomy by around 10%.
